Relentlessly pushing one’s limits is vital when photographing earthscapes. Otherwise, there’s the danger of creating hackneyed images – overexposed ones, so to speak. Rather than shoot an ordinary lava sunset, I studied the wave patterns at this tide pool before determining how best to capture it. If the tides and moon cooperated, they could provide a truly epic shot.

Finally, after days of clear skies, clouds began to assemble on the horizon. I quickly selected a wide angle lens and a low shooting angle, giving the shot an extra dimension.
