Al llegar a la playa de Kihei, no tenía ni idea del magnífico espectáculo que estaba a punto de desarrollarse ante mí. Había explorado esta zona el día anterior, observando cómo el patrón de las olas se interceptaba entre sí mientras seguían la suave curva de la playa. Eran estas formaciones de olas las que quería destacar en la fotografía, pero al ver que el horizonte comenzaba a teñirse con un resplandor ardiente, supe que también me esperaba una magnífica puesta de sol. Esperé hasta que el sol estuvo lo suficientemente bajo como para reflejarse hasta la orilla, y entonces tomé mi exposición desde el océano iluminado para que las palmeras quedaran dramáticamente silueteadas contra el cielo vespertino.
