La sensación que tuve en esta madrugada es difícil de describir. Mientras caminaba bajo la luz de la luna sobre la lava crujiente y humeante, una electricidad inquietante llenaba el aire y no pude evitar pensar que algo trascendental estaba por ocurrir. No fue hasta mucho más tarde que me di cuenta de lo que pudo haber causado esa sensación. Un amigo mío me contó la historia de Pele, la Diosa del Fuego en el folclore hawaiano. Una diosa volátil y, en ocasiones, vengativa, Pele disfrutaba de su poder tanto para destruir la tierra como para crearla. Cuenta la leyenda que ella y su hermana Namaka-o-kaha'l, Diosa del Agua y el Mar, se saboteaban constantemente, lo que provocó que Pele se trasladara por la cadena de islas hasta finalmente reclamar la montaña Mauna Loa en La Isla Grande. Puedes visualizar su perfil en la esquina superior izquierda: es como si estuviera soplando o susurrando hacia el océano, haciendo que el vapor se separe en la superficie del agua.
