Crystal, Colorado
The Crystal Mill in Colorado is certainly not the easiest to get to, but always well worth it. This iconic, piece of history – a former water power station from 1892 – has since become one the most photographed sites in the state, a real classic that only a lucky few ever get to witness up close. Its mesmerizing, rustic wooden construction is something out of the American Frontier era, and I am blown away every time I see it. Traveling up to the mill all morning was no small feat. Even with a proper truck at our disposal, the insanely rocky road made it seem like we were rolling over some abandoned goat track. Thankfully, by the time we made it to our destination, the skies had opened up just enough to let some really nice light in through the clouds. As the river rushed passed the scene, I set my tripod on the opposite bank in order to take in as much as possible. With a long exposure, I was able to add true texture to the raging water in the foreground, which complemented the tranquil atmosphere above. This image symbolizes the dual nature of Crystal’s landscape – a perfect mixture of peril and natural beauty.

Jacob ★★★★★

The drive up was rougher than I expected, but that first glimpse of the 1892 mill against the water made every bump worth it. The print captures the old stone and wooden structure so sharply you can almost hear the river.

Natalie ★★★★★

Got my prints framed and the colors of the old mill and the rushing water just pop against the white mat. Even the rough, rocky trail to get there feels worth it when you see that 1892 structure in person. These photos capture the grit and history perfectly.

Got the 1892 water station in sharp detail even though I shot it from the far side of the river. The hike in left me winded, but the history here makes every step feel worth it.
