과거에 나는 화산을 생각할 때면 우뚝 솟은 봉우리와 웅장한 풍경을 떠올렸다. 마치 3000도의 열기와 공기 중의 유황 냄새로 임박한 위험을 경고하려는 듯, 대자연은 격렬한 화산의 힘의 원천을 잠시 엿볼 수 있는 기회를 주었다. 나는 내 자신과 장비를 한계까지 몰아붙이며 연속으로 셔터를 눌렀다. 더 이상 열기를 견딜 수 없게 되자, 나는 멈추고 시속 25마일로 흐르는 용암의 강에서 물러났다. 그 후, 화산의 심장부로 통하는 이 창은 다시는 볼 수 없게 닫혀 버렸다. 나는 타이밍이라는 선물을 받은 것이다. 더 오래 머물러 내 장비나 나머지 촬영을 위험에 빠뜨리고 싶지 않았다.
It’s rare that a book grabs me within the opening pages, but the Hawaiian setting is so vivid you can almost feel that volcanic heat. The way it focuses on the subtle danger rather than just grand vistas kept me turning pages late into the night.
The heat radiates off the pages in a way that makes you feel the 3000-degree intensity, not just read about it. It completely changed how I picture volcanic landscapes, making me feel the danger and awe right alongside the author. I've already re-read my favorite chapters twice.
Wasn’t sure what to expect from a book set on the Big Island, but the way it captures the feel of the volcanic heat and looming danger really pulled me in. The pacing dips a little in the middle, though the final chapters make up for it.
