사진에서 제가 배운 가장 큰 교훈은 타이밍이 전부라는 것입니다. 기술과 장비가 아무리 완벽해도, 적절한 장소와 시간에 있지 않으면 그 장면을 담을 수 없습니다. 여름의 앤텔로프 캐니언 지하 사암 동굴에서는 정오에 태양이 바로 머리 위를 지나간다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그 순간이 다가와서 제가 사진을 찍을 유일한 기회가 되었을 때, 좁은 빛줄기가 열쇠 구멍을 통해 아래 모래 바닥으로 비쳐 내려왔습니다. 제가 셔터를 누르는 정확한 순간, 나바호 인디언 가이드가 한 줌의 먼지를 빛줄기에 던졌습니다. 그 후 몇 주가 지나서야 촬영 결과를 볼 수 있었고, 그때서야 유령 같은 인간의 형상이 나타난 것을 알 수 있었습니다. 그날 캐니언의 고대 영혼이 저와 함께 있었는지 궁금할 뿐입니다.
