Ik zal nooit vergeten wat ik in deze geweldige grot heb meegemaakt. Het voelde alsof ik werd bekeken door honderden stenen gezichten, waarvan de ogen griezelig uit de rotswanden staarden. Hoe langer je er blijft, hoe meer gezichten en vormen er verschijnen. Deze plek is doordrenkt van de legendes van de Navajo-indianen, en ik kon hun spirituele aanwezigheid echt voelen.
The descent into Sphinx Cavern was pure adrenaline, every turn revealing another row of carved faces that seemed to track my flashlight. That eerie sense of being watched never let up, even when I stopped and held my breath near the rock walls. It’s the kind of place that sticks with you long after
I booked the sunset tour and honestly lost track of time standing among those stone faces in the cavern — the way the light caught their carved features felt almost alive. The sheer scale of the space made me feel tiny, but in the best way possible.
The flashlight barely reaches the far walls, which only makes the carved faces feel more alive as they emerge from the shadows. I kept stopping to listen, and the silence in there was so complete it almost hummed. That hike down was worth every step.
