There is something very special about being in a bamboo forest. The smell, the sound of the bamboo clicking together like chimes, and the gorgeous soft lighting. It’s a totally zen experience. In the Chinese culture, bamboo is a symbol of longevity. I knew on the Pipiwai Trail in Hana, Maui, was a hidden massive bamboo forest. I needed overcast, soft light for this shoot and hung out in Hana for a few days until the clouds rolled in. I chose a vertical composition to capture the magic of this 70-foot-plus tall ornamental forest. The wind was a huge challenge, as I needed a long exposure in low light to maintain the depth of field I needed. I shot many exposures during calm wind gusts and selected this frame for the galleries. Enjoy the Zen!
