The moment I saw this dock, before I even pressed the shutter, I knew it was going to be an epic shot. The simplicity, the colors, and the clean space surrounding the entire dock opened my mind to total freedom. It was such a delicate scene – it had to be perfect. The colors, the mist, the composition, and the time of day were all working in my favor. The last component I was struggling with was the water – it had to have a serene feel. Without that, it’s not what I envisioned in my mind.

To give the image a painterly feel, a dreamlike state – I needed to push the boundaries of photography. I decided to pull out a neutral density filter – this tricks the camera. With a long exposure I was able to capture that dreamlike state. It looks like it’s floating – exactly the way I’d seen it in my mind. Mother Nature provided me the perfection – I just had to enhance it.

When you look at this image, I hope you can feel the total peace I did standing here; the serenity in the moment. That’s what photography is all about to me.

Mist rolled over the water just as the light broke through, and this print captures that exact quiet moment without any clutter pulling your eye away. The colors are true to what I saw standing there in Seattle—soft, muted, and a little moody. I’ve stared at it every morning since it arrived and it

The composition is so clean and balanced that it almost feels like the dock was waiting for someone to capture it just right. The colors are soft but rich, and the negative space around the whole scene gives it a calm, timeless mood. I've already got it framed in my living room and keep finding myse
