Mount Desert Island, Maine
This gorgeous lighthouse presides over the rugged south western coastline of Mount Desert Island. Although easily accessible by road, in order to gain the vantage I wanted it proved a difficult location to reach. I had shot it at sunset previously but really wanted to experience a sunrise there. I arrived at the site in complete darkness and scaled the precipitous cliffs by literally feeling my way! It was freezing cold and the granite boulders seemed to engulf my every step. Eventually I reached the spot were I knew the composition would be perfect–taking in the cliffs, the lighthouse and the horizon–and set up precariously. By the time I had shot off several rolls of film, my fingers were numb and I was soaked by the salt spray rising up from the Atlantic. But it was all worth it when I saw the results–I absolutely love this shot!
