Etsin viikkoja täydellistä auringonnousukuvaa Havaijista, ja heti kun saavuin Kokin rannalle, tiesin löytäneeni sen. Kaukaisuudessa siintävä saari horisontissa sekä tulivuorikivien muodot ja tekstuurit rantaviivalla antoivat minulle dramaattiset puitteet uskomattomalle trooppiselle auringonnousulle, jonka näin rakentuvan. Asetin jalustani niin lähelle vedenrajaa kuin mahdollista ja käytin hyvin matalaa kamerakulmaa, jotta pääsisin todella osaksi maisemaa. Aikaisin aamulla valtameri saa sinertävän sävyn, ja tämän kuvan vahvuus piilee sen kolmessa eri sävyssä – taivaassa, meressä ja etualassa. Auringonnousun vaaleanpunaiset sävyt valaisivat pilvet alhaalta päin, ja vuoroveden noustessa ja laskiessa, kivien yli vyöryen, pitkä valotusaika muutti aallot pyörteiseksi sumuverhoksi.
