엘 캐피탄으로 알려진 3000피트 높이의 화강암 암벽은 수없이 많은 사진에 담겨 왔습니다. 하지만 저는 올바른 이미지로 이 암벽에 대해 새로운 이야기를 할 수 있다고 확신했습니다. 전체를 프레임에 담되, 고립시키지 않고 맥락을 부여하고 싶었습니다. 독특한 무언가를 포착해야 했죠. 전경의 호수와 눈 덮인 바위는 사진에 훌륭한 원근감을 더해 주며, 엘 캐피탄 꼭대기에 닿는 구름은 마치 화산처럼 살아있는 듯한 느낌을 줍니다. 저는 이 고대 암벽에 아직 생명이 있다는 것을 보여주는 제 사진이 마음에 들었습니다.
Woke up at 4am to catch the first light hitting the east face, and the 3000-foot vertical rise just swallowed the valley below me. The granite’s texture in the shadows is something I’ve never seen captured this cleanly, even after a dozen trips here.
I’ve stared at photos of this monolith for years, but capturing it at dawn when the light hits the granite’s texture just right finally made it feel like mine. The 3000-foot scale translates surprisingly well in a wide shot, even on a phone screen.
The sheer scale of that 3000-foot granite wall doesn't hit you until you're halfway up the trail, and then it just keeps going. I've flipped through countless photos of this place, but finally seeing the rock's texture and shadows in person made every shot I took feel completely new.
