킬라우에아 화산, 하와이 빅아일랜드
흥분과 적절한 위험, 불확실성이 결합된 경험, 활동 중인 화산을 촬영하는 것만큼 도전적이고 보상이 큰 경험은 없습니다. 한 달 동안 저는 하와이 빅아일랜드에서 살며 일했고, 스파르타식 일정을 유지하며 새벽 1시에 일어나 별빛만으로 밝혀진 용암을 촬영했습니다. 햇빛 한 줄기조차도 사진을 망칠 수 있습니다. 정오에 불꽃놀이를 보는 것과 같죠. 제가 이 용암 위를 걸은 전날, 그것은 실제로 마그마였습니다–지각 내에서 끓어오르는. 그래도 저는 이 밧줄 모양의 용암 줄기를 영원히 포착할 기회를 놓칠 수 없었습니다. 아직 단단하지 않은 땅 위를 조심스럽게 걸으며, 삼각대를 설치했을 때 다리가 쉭쉭 소리를 내며 타고 천천히 녹는 것을 보면서 두려움이 절정에 달했습니다.
