Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee
As autumn edged to winter in Tennessee, temperatures dropped to well below freezing. The valleys and peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains were constantly shrouded in fog, and conditions were extremely difficult for shooting—but there was one classic tiering mountain range I was determined to capture. After five frustrating attempts at a sunrise shoot that were completely fogged out, I had almost given up hope. On the sixth morning as I sat in the freezing near-dark awaiting sunrise, the first tinges of dawn told me my luck had changed! Daybreak cast a blush-coloured glow over the horizon and the peaks of the distant mountain range were revealed as they emerged, suspended on the horizon. The silhouetted spruce trees in the foreground add a perspective to the shot, which perfectly conveys the strength and subtlety of Nature.

The cold really came through in this one—those freezing temperatures and the fog clinging to the peaks made me feel like I was standing right there in the Smokies. I keep going back to the part where the valleys stay hidden, it's hauntingly beautiful.

The fog rolling over those peaks looked exactly like the photos — thick and moody, turning the whole valley into a gray dreamscape. I’ve been chasing that view for years, and this captured it better than I hoped.

The cold air hit my face immediately when I opened this up — you can practically feel that below-freezing Tennessee bite, and the fog rolling between the peaks looks so real it’s almost eerie. I’ve stared at it for a week and still catch new layers in the valleys every time. Exactly what I wanted to
