The beautiful purple flowers that fill the foreground of this shot are actually a noxious weed known as “Patterson’s curse
.” It is lethal to horses and cattle, and a scourge to the farmers, but it makes for a gorgeous photograph! After camping out under the shelter of these spreading gums, I rose very early, because I wanted to work with the morning light and shadows to create the effect I was looking for. As the sun gradually illuminated the tips of the blooms, and the shadows crept away, I captured this beautiful image of a country morning.

The deep purple carpet of Patterson’s curse is so vivid it almost looks painted, and the way it contrasts with the pale sky makes the whole scene feel endless. I've had this on my wall for a week and still catch myself staring at it during tea.

The purple flower field dominates the frame exactly as shown, and the print quality really captures that vivid color contrast against the dry Australian backdrop. I hung it in my hallway and it’s become a daily conversation starter.

The irony of photographing a noxious weed this beautifully isn't lost on me—those purple blooms are sharp enough to frame on any wall. It's got me googling Patterson's curse, which I never expected from a landscape print, and the detail in the foreground is genuinely crisp.
