写真で私が学んだ最大の教訓は、タイミングがすべてだということです。どんなに完璧な技術と機材を持っていても、適切な場所に適切なタイミングでいなければ、その瞬間を撮ることはできません。アンテロープキャニオンの地下砂岩洞窟では、夏には太陽が正午に真上を通過することを知っていました。その時間が近づき、撮影の唯一のチャンスが訪れたとき、狭い光の筋がキーホールを通って砂のキャニオン床に差し込みました。シャッターを切った正確な瞬間、私のナバホ族のガイドが一握りの砂を光の柱に投げ入れました。撮影の結果を見ることができたのは数週間後で、そのとき初めて、現れた幽霊のような人間の形を見ることができました。その日、キャニオンの古代の精霊が私と共にいたのかもしれないと、ただ思うばかりでした。
