The Big Island, Hawaii
Shooting the night sky is extremely challenging but also very rewarding. On top of Mauna Kea at 14,000 feet on the Big Island is a special place I’ll always remember. Such an experience – surrounded by 360° of night sky. I’d left Hilo, where it was 80°f, and now the temperature was freezing. Literally. I just had to get this shot and take advantage of some of the clearest sky on earth. A 30-second exposure enabled the nebulae in the Milky Way to reveal themselves through the lens. I was blown away because only the camera could see this, the human eye can’t! I framed up this tree in the pitch black of night. It was frustrating, and a lot of trial and error. But in the end I got the shot. Mother Nature is amazing.
