I searched many weeks for the perfect sunrise shot of Hawai’i and as soon as I arrived at Koki Beach I knew I had found it. The distant island silhouetted on the horizon and the shapes and textures of the volcanic rocks on the shoreline gave me a dramatic setting for the incredible tropical sunrise I could see building. I positioned my tripod as close as I could to the waters edge and used a very low camera angle so I could really become part of the scene. Early in the morning the ocean takes on a bluish tinge and the strength in this shot lies in its three distinct hues–the sky, the sea and the foreground. The pink tones of sunrise illuminated the clouds from beneath, and as the tide ebbed and flowed, tumbling over the rocks, a long exposure transformed the waves into a swirling blanket of mist.
